I. How do we create hypertext files using Microsoft Word?

1.Click Start-> Go to Program to open Microsoft Word-> Type "Welcome to My Home Page"-> Go to File   and Save as html document.

When you save the file onto a Floppy disc, please type A:\ in the File Name box, and Enter ->> When you see 3 1/2 Floppy in the Top box, then type your file name in the Lower box. Remember you MUST always save your files in htm format and ONLY use small letters for file names (no space in between words).

*All documents in the World Wide Web are written in html language. Click View to view the source and you will see the codes, but we do not have to write those codes anymore to create our html files. Thank goodness!

2.To add a line: click Insert; add Horizontal Lines; Choose one and click OK.

3. To add a background color: Go to Format, and click Background to choose a color for the background of your page.

4. Choose any image you want to copy onto your files->Right Click your mouse->Choose Save Image as..->Save the image in your folder and remember the file name of the image->Click Insert on you Tool Bar->Click Image->Choose from Files->Choose the image you want to add to your page->Click Open->Click O.K.->Save the image file->Upload the image the same way as you do with html files by Clicking Browse and Upload.( Or Right Click your mouse->Choose Copy-> Then go back to your webpage and Paste the image on your page-> Save.).

5. To create a hyperlink: Go to Insert and click Hyperlink. Next to the box for making "Link to file or URL", click Browse and choose the file you want to make a link to. Click OK. Now the hypertext will change into another color( the default color is blue).

6. View a template of Homepage.

How to create your html files using Page Composer?

1. Open Netscape. Click Communicator, then open Page Composer. (By now you should have a "steering wheel" icon and "pen" icon at the bottom of your screen. If you see both icons, you are ready to go.)
2. Write on Page Composer the same way you write on a Word Document. Save the file using File, Save As.
3. To add a line: click the line icon at the Tool Bar.
4. To add a background color: Click Format, Background to choose the color you like. (Reminder: the background color should not be too dark, or bright, or colorful. Or busy. Choose something subtle. People want to read your content not just admire the background color.)
5. To add an image: Click Insert, Image. (A page should not have too many images because they could take a long time to appear on the screen(to be uploaded), or they distract people's attention from your content. Since your web viewers can not see you, sometimes images define who you are. In the beginning, we should pay more attention to the content. In the future, when you are more skillful you may do search in the Web and find the right images to represent your self.)
6. To make a hyper link: Click Insert ; Click Browse to choose the file you would like to make the link to; click O.K.; Save. You will not see hyper links work on the Page Composer, but after you upload the files into Angelfire.com, the links will work.

Instructions for Web Publishing

1. How to get a 11 mbytes free web site in www.geocities.com?

a. Open www.geocities.com, and click the flashing Sign Up Now under Free Website .
b. Follow through the registration procedure. Provide your personal information and your e-mail address. Click I Agree.

C. Go back to geocities.com and login on the upper left hand corner of your page.  Type in your username and your new password. Enter. Click file manager, and click Enter File manager. On the left-hand side of the page, please click Upload Files.  Now we are ready to upload our index page which is our hom.e page into Geocities.

D. To upload your page into geocities's site, we need to upload your index.htm to replace the geocities's index file. Click Browse next to each box and find your index file ( If your index file is in your Floppy disc, please enter A:\ in the file name to get access to your floppy and then double-click  the files you want to upload), or any other file you would like to upload into your geocities's site. Click Upload. Now you can preview your home page.  If you can see your own index page in Geocities, then Congratulations! You have just succeeded in creating your own web site.

E. Your website address should be: www.geocities.com/YourUsername/index.htm. Put this address in the address bar and you should be able to view your website.

2.How to get a free web site in www.angelfire.com?

a.  How to register in www.angelfire.com ?

In the web address bar, type in www.angelfire.com->enter->Click Register->Type in ny4 for the 1st box-> Type in mbhsxxxx(your four-digit ID) in the 2nd box->Choose a password(6-8 characters)->use our school address(411 Pearl Street, New York, NY 10038)->Use mbhsXXXX(four-digit ID)@mbhs.bergtraum.k12.ny.us as your temporary e-mail address->Click Create Account.->Wait for the message of "Congratulations!", which means you have succeeded in registering.->Click the sign on your left-hand side(to create a new e-mail account in angelfire.com)->Follow the instructions to finish the registration by answering the questions->Skip all the optional questions->After you finish all these procedures, close angelfire.com->reopen angelfire.com->login->use your mbhsxxxx as your user's name->your password->Go to Preferences->Choose to"change your e-mail address"-> Type in your new e-mail address, which is mbhsxxx@angelfire.com. If your ID is 2234, now you have your new e-mail address(mbhs2234@angelfire.com) and your new web page address is (www.angelfire.com/ny4/mbhs2234).


b..How to upload files into angelfire.com to create your own page?

Open www.angelfire.com/Click Login->Type in /ny4/mbhsxxx as the directory name->enter your password->Click Browse->Choose the files you want to upload(your html files are in h: folder. So type h: to find your files in the Netscape-web folder; If you upload files from your floppy disc, then type in a: and choose any file from there.)->Click Upload to finish the uploading process.->Click View to view your site (Reminder: If the file you are uploading is open, it can not be uploaded. You need to close all the files you want to upload.)
* When you see a steering wheel logo, it means you are in the web where you can only view your site without doing any changes; if you see a pen logo, it means you are in your web composer where you can change, recreate, add, or delete your files.

c.How to add images into your files ?

Go to www.angelfire.com->login->Type in /ny4/mbhsxxx as your directory->Click Images under Tools on your right hand side.->Choose any image you want to copy onto your files->Right Click your mouse->Choose Save Image as..->Save the image in your folder and remember the file name of the image->Click Insert on you Tool Bar->Click Image->Choose from Files->Choose the image you want to add to your page->Click Open->Click O.K.->Save the image file->Upload the image the same way as you do with html files by Clicking Browse and Upload.

d.To make the web page appear , you must save your index page as index.html. The rest of the files can be .htm.
